The average wedding in the US cost $34,200 in 2025, according to The Knot’s 2026 Real Weddings Study of more than 10,000 couples. The average couple invited 117 guests, which works out to about $292 per guest.
That number is useful as a reference point, but it is not your number. Where you live, how many people you invite and what matters most to you will move your total more than anything else. This guide shows where the money usually goes, and the calculator below splits your own budget in seconds.
What a wedding costs right now
Guest count is the biggest single driver of cost. Here is what couples spent in 2025, by the size of the wedding:

Location matters too. Weddings in the Mid-Atlantic ($48,400) and Northeast ($46,600) cost the most on average, while the Midwest ($29,000) came in lowest. The South, West and Southwest all landed between about $30,800 and $31,300.

How to build your budget in 5 steps
- Agree on one total number. Talk about what you can spend and who is contributing before you look at a single venue. A number you can both explain is easier to protect.
- Choose your top three priorities. Give those categories more than the average share, and trim the ones you care less about.

- Keep a buffer. We suggest holding back 5 to 10 percent for surprises. It is much easier to spend a buffer at the end than to find money you do not have.
- Track payments, not only estimates. Write down every deposit, balance and due date. Most final payments land in the last month, all at once.
